city...
a radical journal in the making and unmaking
since 2019 city has had a new, non-hierarchical collaborative editorial structure and ethos consisting of three overlapping groups: the city collective and two sub-groups drawn from it, the city editors and the section editors. the city collective is a body of active participants who meet regularly to shape the journal and determine its overall direction, responsible for guiding the strategy, direction, content, organizational processes and associated material and events of city journal.
the section editors take responsibility for social media communication, website and book reviews as well as specific journal projects such as our majority urbanisms and scenes-sounds-action. the city editors are responsible for the day-to-day running of the journal. the roles are ‘rolling’, changing every few years to retain openness.
the website is key to city’s aim to engage with and beyond academic debates to develop radical praxis collaboratively with practitioners, activists, artists and policy-makers that are needed to create new forms of urban social justice. the website provides a platform for less formal conversations about cities and the urban experience:
a virtual sketchbook where ideas – playful, practical and serious – can be shared, contested and developed. the blog relates to city journal’s content, authors and members, including interviews, short articles, dialogues, reviews, photography and visual interpretations of the urban experience. moreover, through our blog we seek to create and support stronger links with the global south, such as the acapulco project which will illustrate projects related to urban sustainable development. you can also find the latest editorials, articles and table of contents for current and past issues on the journal page. under the more fully collective editorial structure since 2019, city seeks to open up its pages to multiple voices and disciplines in an effort to decentre knowledge.
